GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday launched a national scholarship initiative aimed at increasing the number of Somali women pursuing postgraduate education and preparing them for leadership roles in public and professional sectors.

The program, known as “Rajo Kaaba” or “Building Hope,” will provide scholarships for Somali women enrolling in master’s degree programs. Speaking at the launch ceremony in Mogadishu, Barre said the initiative is a key component of the government’s broader “DanQaran” agenda to expand educational access and strengthen human development nationwide.

“Education is the foundation of progress and state-building,” the prime minister said. “A society without education is vulnerable to conflict, crisis, and poverty. This program reflects our commitment to empower Somali women with the knowledge and skills needed to help lead this nation forward.”

Barre urged women to use the opportunity not only to advance academically but also to take a more active role in public life, including participating in the upcoming local government elections.

He said the scholarship aligns with the government’s National Transformation Program, which focuses on improving professional competence and strengthening institutions.

The prime minister also acknowledged the Ministry of Education and Somali National University for their work in expanding higher education opportunities while maintaining alignment with Somali culture and values.

The program is expected to begin selecting and admitting its first cohort of recipients in the coming months.
