PM Barre Launches Somalia Fisheries Week

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre Wednesay launched the Somalia Fisheries Week in Mogadishu.

The event is aimed at highlighting the rich marine resources in the country and celebrate the hardworking fishermen and women who drive the economy of coastal communities.

Speaking during the function, Prime Minister Barre said the federal government plans to invest in the fishing industry which he said has the potential of contributing to 50% of the country’s economy.

“Excited to kick off Somalia Fisheries Week, celebrating our vibrant marine resources and the hardworking fishermen and women who drive our coastal communities forward. Looking forward to a week of growth, sustainability, and prosperity,” he said.

PM Barre called on the Somali business community to also invest in the fishing industry and take advantage of emerging opportunities in international markets adding that the government will invest in necessary infrastructure such as roads to the coastal parts of Somalia and ports to facilitate the trade.

He further said that the federal government is also investing in cheap energy sources and construction of cold facilities and processing plants to enable valued adittion and better prices for Somali fish products.
