Somalia to Tap Morocco’s Port Expertise as PM Barre Pushes Infrastructure Upgrade
GOOBJOOG NEWS | TANGIER: Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has said that his visit to Morocco’s Tanger Med Port will directly support Somalia’s efforts to modernize its ports and reposition the country as a competitive player in global trade.
Touring Africa’s largest port, Barre stressed that Somalia must draw lessons from successful global logistics hubs to strengthen its economic foundations. He said the visit is part of the DanQaran government’s plan to equip Somalia with the infrastructure needed to drive growth, attract investment and improve the efficiency of national trade corridors.
“Our engagement here is part of the government’s broader strategy to build essential infrastructure that fuels economic development,” Barre said, noting that Morocco’s experience offers valuable insights for Somalia’s port modernization plans.
Barre met with Mehdi Tazi Riffi, CEO of Tanger Med, to discuss technical cooperation, port management models and ways Somalia can adapt Morocco’s logistics expertise to its own coastline. The Prime Minister said stronger partnerships will help Somalia upgrade its ports, enhance connectivity and secure a greater share of regional and international shipping.
The visit comes as Somalia’s maritime sector gains momentum. Mogadishu and Berbera ports have recently earned international recognition for improved operations, and the government is advancing plans for new deep-water facilities.
Barre said these investments will have long-term impact: lowering trade costs, boosting exports, creating jobs and strengthening Somalia’s role in regional commerce.
