PM Barre Says Somalia–Iraq Cooperation Will Boost Security and Economic Growth
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said closer cooperation between Somalia and Iraq will strengthen both nations’ fight against terrorism and open new economic opportunities, following talks with an Iraqi government delegation in Mogadishu.
Barre said the two countries share similar security challenges and can benefit from exchanging experience in counter-terrorism and stabilisation efforts. He noted that Somalia is advancing its campaign against militant groups and values partnerships that support national security and long-term peace.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the economic dimension of the relationship, pointing to potential investment in fisheries, agriculture, livestock and energy. He said enhanced cooperation could help Somalia unlock value in key productive sectors and create new channels for trade.
“We are working to expand partnerships that directly improve the security and prosperity of our people,” Barre said in a statement. “Somalia and Iraq share historic ties, and today’s talks mark a new step toward practical cooperation.”
Both governments agreed to follow up with technical discussions aimed at turning the commitments into concrete projects.
