PM Khaire orders army and police chiefs to ensure safety of Turkish contractors

Prime Minister Hassan Khaire has directed security chiefs to put in place sufficient security measures to ensure the safety of Turkish and Somali workers involved in the construction of the Mogadishu-Afgooye road.

Addressing a meeting that brought together police and army chiefs and ambassadors from Turkey and Qatar, the PM said the security of contractors is paramount to ensure the project is completed in time and within set standards.

He directed police commissioner Abdi Hassan Mohamed and SNA Chief of Staff Odowaa Yusuf Rage to work together in putting in place measures to secure the contractors. The PM said Somalia takes full responsibility for the safety of all those involved in the road construction.

The PM’s directive comes four days after an attack on Turkish road contractors in Agooye which injured three of them and six security personnel.

Turkey also lost four contractors during the December 28, 2019 truck bomb attack in Ex-Control area which killed 89 people and injured over 150 others.

The CEO of the Turkish contractor, Enez, Seracettin Aksun also attended the meeting.

The road project is funded by the Qatari government.
