UPDATE: Police identify suicide bomber, death toll at 17

The attack comes exactly two months after a deadly truck loaded with explosives drove into the city claiming over 500 lives

Police have identified the suicide bomber who blew up in General Kahiye Police Academy in Mogadishu claiming 17 lives, State Minister Abdullahi Hamud has said but noted his identity would not be released until investigations are concluded.

Hamud, the Minister of State in the PM’s office said also noted the death toll was now 17 while 17 others were injured.

“It is now confirmed that 17 police officers died and 17 others were injured,” said Hamud while conveying his condolences and on behalf of the cabinet.

“The cabinet is conveying its condolences to the victims of the attack. We wish them injured quick recovery,” the minister said while addressing the media.

National army Chief Major Gen. Abdiweli Jama Warsame also condoled with the families and called on the military to remain vigilant.

Following the incident, the Minister said the match between Galmudug and Puntland scheduled for today will be postponed in honour of the fallen officers.

Police spokesman Major Mohamed Hussein quoted by Reuters said the attacker with explosives strapped to his body, infiltrated the General Kaahiye Police Training Academy and struck during a police parade.
