Police officer handed death sentence for killing rickshaw driver

A military court in Mogadishu has sentenced to death a senior police officer found guilty of killing a rickshaw drive in Beletweyne town last month.

Judge Hassan Noor Shuute declared Mahad Hussein guilty of shooting to death Yassin Ali Saney August 27 this year in Beletweyne.

The judge noted the defendant can appeal the case.

The sentencing of the officer comes in light of two recent killings allegedly involving military officers in Mogadishu. A soldier escorting a senior officer opened fire at a school bus on Wednesday killing a nine year old pupil from Hamar Boarding school in Mogadishu.

Two days later, another military man was reported to have killed a businessman in Seybiano area. The officer is alleged to have shot dead Dayah Jirow in traffic.
