POLLS DAY: House set to elect new Speaker
The country will today have a new speaker of the Lower House as 11 candidates among them over four former ministers contest to succeed Prof. Mohamed Jawari who exited early this month after a month-long political show-down.
Goobjoog News correspondent in Parliament reports the stage is already set for the exercise which is expected to kick off this morning. “Preparations seem to have been completed here. Ballot boxes have already been positioned and sitting arrangements for the candidates also finished,” our correspondent says.
The 11 candidates who pitched their case for election before the House last week will be banking on MPs to settle for their candidature. The winner of the poll will require a majority vote which is two thirds of the House translating into at least 184 votes.
The winner will become the second post Transitional Federation Government Speaker. Jawari served in the 9th and 10th parliament which started from 2012 and 2017 respectively.
