GOOBJOOG NEWS/MOGADISHU: Celebrations are currently underway in Mogadishu and other parts of the country to mark the 64th anniversary of independence and the union between then British and Italian Somali administered regions.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led the celebrations Sunday night in hoisting the flag ahead of today’s celebrations. On July 1, 1960, Somaliland which was under British rule and Somalia under Italian rule signed the Act of the Union to form the Republic of Somalia.

The day is also described as the Flag Day as it marks the first time the flag of the united republic was raised in Mogadishu and Hargeisa.

In today’s celebrations, the military displayed their style and tact through infantry marches and for fly-past maneuvers by the airforce.
