Port Of Mogadishu Seeks Closer Ties with Seattle in Push to Modernise Maritime Sector

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s main seaport is looking to deepen international partnerships after the head of the Port of Mogadishu visited the Port of Seattle in the United States, where officials from both sides agreed to pursue closer cooperation on training, technical expertise and port management.

The visit by Port of Mogadishu Director General Mohamed Ali Nur came at the invitation of the Port of Seattle Commission and included meetings with commissioners Hamdi Mohamed, a Somali-American leader serving on the commission, and Sam Cho.

During the discussions, the Mogadishu delegation outlined recent efforts to modernise Somalia’s busiest port, highlighting improvements in operations, services and infrastructure aimed at handling growing volumes of trade.

Seattle officials, meanwhile, shared their experience in managing one of North America’s leading ports, discussing areas ranging from logistics and cargo operations to workforce development and modern port administration.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed to work towards establishing a “Sister Ports” partnership. The proposed arrangement would focus on exchanging technical knowledge, providing professional training for port staff and strengthening institutional cooperation between the two ports.

Neither side announced when the partnership could formally take effect or whether it would involve financial support.

The Port of Mogadishu has become increasingly important to Somalia’s economic recovery. Handling the vast majority of the country’s imports and exports, it serves as a crucial gateway for food, fuel, construction materials and humanitarian supplies entering the country.

In recent years, Somalia has sought to modernise its maritime infrastructure as part of wider efforts to rebuild the economy after decades of conflict and political instability. The government has been encouraging international partnerships to improve efficiency, introduce modern technology and strengthen the skills of its workforce.

The proposed cooperation with Seattle also reflects the growing role of the Somali diaspora in building links between Somalia and international institutions. Commissioner Hamdi Mohamed, who welcomed the Mogadishu delegation, is among a growing number of Somali-Americans serving in public office in the United States, illustrating the expanding influence of the diaspora in fostering economic and institutional ties with Somalia.

While challenges remain, including security concerns and infrastructure gaps, officials see stronger partnerships with established international ports as a key step towards making Mogadishu a more competitive maritime gateway for the Horn of Africa.
