President Engages with Political Party Leaders Over Universal Vote Model

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has today held talks with the leaders of various political parties in the country to discuss preparations for upcoming elections.

According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the talks focused on the implementation of the one-person-one-vote electoral model approved by parliament. The president told the leaders that it was time the country transitioned from the clan-based system to a democratic model that enabled Somalis to vote directly for their leaders.

“The government is fully committed to finalizing a democratic election system based on the principle of one person, one vote,” the president said. “National consultations and political stakeholder engagement are key pillars to ensure an open and credible electoral process.”

The meeting comes ahead of the June 15 national consultative forum which includes the participation of the governm,ent, civil society grousp, opposition leaders among other groups.
