President Mohamud, AFRICOM Commander Discuss Strengthening Counter-Terrorism Partnership

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander General Michael E. Langley in Mogadishu on Tuesday, as both nations vowed to deepen cooperation in their joint counter-terrorism efforts.

The talks, held in the Somali capital, focused on enhancing the Somalia–U.S. security partnership, with particular emphasis on accelerating operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS-linked militants.

The leaders also discussed improving coordination within multinational security frameworks, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the U.S.-supported AUSSOM initiative.

President Mohamud thanked the United States for its “steadfast support” in Somalia’s efforts to defeat international terrorism and stabilize the country.

In a parallel meeting, Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Ambassador Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, and Somali National Army (SNA) Commander General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh met with senior AFRICOM officials and U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Larry André.

Officials on both sides reaffirmed their commitment to building long-term security cooperation, including U.S. support for Somali-led military operations and institutional reform within the armed forces.

The meetings come amid a renewed offensive by Somali forces, backed by international allies, to reclaim territory from Al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia.
