President Mohamud Appoints New Envoy to Lead Fight Against Violent Extremism
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed MP Aweys Mohamed Omar as the Presidential Special Envoy for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE), tasking him with leading national efforts to curb extremist ideologies and strengthen state resilience.
In announcing the appointment, President Hassan Sheikh urged the new envoy to perform his duties with “integrity, competence, and a strong sense of national responsibility.” The President said the role is central to safeguarding national security and reinforcing the foundations of peace across the country.
As Special Envoy, Aweys Mohamed Omar will be responsible for advancing key priorities, including strengthening security and state institutions, preventing radicalization, countering violent extremist narratives, improving cooperation between communities and security agencies, and shaping national P/CVE policies.
The newly appointed envoy brings extensive experience from his work across security institutions, public policy, and counter-extremism initiatives — expertise the President said equips him to effectively carry out the mandate of the office.
