President Mohamud Appoints New Manager for Mogadishu Port amid Modernization Drive

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed Ambassador Mohamed Ameriko as the new manager of Mogadishu port, replacing Ahmed Washington.
The announcement made through a government decree is part of a broader push to modernize the port, one of the nation’s most vital maritime assets.
In May, the Minister of Ports and Marine Transport conducted an inspection to assess ongoing upgrades, highlighting efforts to digitize customs, improve container logistics, and enhance security protocols at the facility.
The leadership transition follows the government’s launch of the “New Mogadishu” development initiative late last year. The Plan includes construction of a modern port, international airport and economic zone aimed at attracting investment, creating jobs, and transforming the capital’s infrastructure.
Ameriko’s diplomatic experience positions him well to steer the port’s modernization and strengthen trade partnerships.
The move is viewed as a step toward revitalizing Somalia’s infrastructure and expanding its role in regional commerce.
