GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed Ambassador Aweys Haji Yusuf as his new National Security Advisor, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s security and reform agenda.

Ambassador Aweys, a veteran diplomat and former presidential aide, replaces Hussein Maalim Mohamud, who was thanked by the President for his service during a critical period in Somalia’s security transition.

A statement from Villa Somalia said the appointment comes as the government intensifies its fight against terrorism and accelerates reforms ahead of upcoming elections.

Ambassador Aweys brings extensive experience to the post, having served as Head of the Policy Planning Office at the Presidency from 2012 to 2016, where he played a key role in shaping Somalia’s national security and economic strategies.

He later served as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia (2023–2025), where he was credited with strengthening bilateral ties, particularly on strategic and security matters.

“His leadership and expertise will be vital to implementing our national security strategy and ensuring long-term peace,” the Presidency said in its statement.

The appointment is expected to improve coordination between domestic and international security partners, as Somalia continues operations against Al-Shabaab insurgents and pursues state-building efforts.
