President Mohamud in Kenya for Talks on Somalia’s Security Transition
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal republic of Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in Nairobi, Kenya as part of his ongoing regional tour to countries contributing troops to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The president is expected to hold talks with President William Ruto to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries and support for Somalia’s security transition, as the country prepares to take full responsibility after ATMIS forces withdrawal.
The Kenyan visit comes following similar meetings with Uganda, Burundi, and Djibouti leaders earlier this week, focusing on the phased withdrawal of ATMIS forces.
ATMIS is set to conclude its mission by December 2024 and will be replaced in 2025 by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which will deploy a smaller contingent of about 11,000 troops.
The new mission will prioritize securing urban areas and critical infrastructure, while Somali forces lead national security operations.
