President Mohamud calls on African states to support lifting of arms embargo
GOOBJOOG NEWS | DJIBOUTI: Federal Government of Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has made an appeal to IGAD member states to support the lifting of the arms embargo imposed on Somalia.
Speaking at the IGAD summit in Djbouti, president Mohamud said that Somalia has made commendable strides in restoring peace and stability despite ongoing security challenges.
The president asked IGAD member states to assist Somalia’s push for the lifting on the arms embargo as a way of empowering the country to effectively deal with the ongoing security challenges posed by the Al-Shabaab militants.
President Mohamud further asked African states to invest on resilient-based policies to surmount challenges posed by climate changes so as to address the humanitarian issues caused by draught floods and desertification.
He noted that climatic challenges has severely impacted agricultural productivity and disrupted the lives of its citizens across the Horn of Africa which he said calls for the adoption long-term strategies that not only mitigate climate risks but also enhance the capacity of communities to adapt and thrive in the face of these challenges.
