President Mohamud Leads Commemoration of Somali Youth Day at SYL Monument

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Republic of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led a solemn ceremony on Thursday at the SYL Monument in Mogadishu to mark Somali Youth Day, paying tribute to the founding members of the Somali Youth League (SYL) and reaffirming the critical role of youth in the nation’s development.
Laying a wreath at the foot of the iconic monument, President Mohamud honored the thirteen young pioneers who established the SYL in 1943, a movement that played a pivotal role in Somalia’s struggle for independence.
The ceremony was part of nationwide celebrations commemorating May 15th, a date that symbolizes the courage, unity, and vision of Somalia’s youth.
In his remarks, the President extended heartfelt congratulations to Somali youth both at home and abroad, praising their contributions to national progress and their resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, including the fight against extremist groups.
“Our young people are the backbone of Somalia’s future,” President Mohamud said. “Their determination and patriotism continue to drive the country forward, just as the founders of the SYL did more than eight decades ago.”
The President emphasized the enduring importance of the SYL’s core values, unity, solidarity, and sovereignty, and called on all Somalis to uphold these principles in pursuit of peace and stability.
“Let us honor the legacy of the SYL by building a nation rooted in the ideals they fought for,” he added.
The event at the SYL Monument served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by young Somalis in the pursuit of freedom and the continuing significance of youth in shaping Somalia’s national identity and future.
