GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has condoled with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the people of Turkey for the tragic loss of lives caused by a mine explosion that has also left several others still trapped in a mine pit.

A Twitter post by President Hassan Sheikh wished the injured a speedy recovery and offered the Somali people’s thoughts and prayers to the victim’s grieving family and friends in this difficult time.

“I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the brotherly people of Türkiye for the tragic loss of lives of miners in the Amasra incident”.

The President added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery.”

On Saturday, the Turkish government issued a statement saying “at least 40 people were killed and 11 injured in the coal mine explosion in Amasra, northern Turkey; there were 110 miners in the shaft, with 58 rescued.”

Rescue efforts are ongoing to save the trapped miners even as a miners’ union said the deaths were “preventable” and branded the tragedy a “massacre”.
