President Mohamud Congratulates Liban Ahmed Hassan on Election as Galmudug Leader

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has congratulated Liban Ahmed Hassan on his election as the new leader of Galmudug State, alongside his deputy, Abdiweli Ibrahim Garyare, following a vote by members of the Galmudug State Assembly in Dhuusamareeb on Thursday.

In a statement, President Mohamud congratulated the two leaders on securing the confidence of the state assembly and urged them to prioritise security, reconciliation and economic development.

He called on the new administration to address longstanding clan conflicts, strengthen social cohesion and improve infrastructure and essential public services across Galmudug.

The president described the election as historic, saying it formed part of a broader democratic process involving hundreds of thousands of residents in Galmudug’s urban and rural communities.

He said public participation in the electoral process demonstrated the growing role of citizens in Somalia’s democratisation and state-building efforts.

The election follows a series of political and electoral developments in Galmudug, including direct local elections held in July as part of Somalia’s efforts to expand public participation in governance.

The selection of the new leadership by the state assembly marks another stage in Galmudug’s political transition, with the incoming administration expected to address security challenges, local disputes and development priorities.

President Mohamud wished Hassan and Garyare success in their new responsibilities, expressing hope that their administration would advance the aspirations of Galmudug residents for peace, effective governance and development.
