President Mohamud Enacts Law Creating National Human Rights Watchdog
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed into law the creation of an Independent National Human Rights Commission, a move aimed at strengthening oversight and protection of civil liberties in the country.
The law was enacted after receiving approval from both houses of the Federal Parliament.
President Mohamud said the commission’s formation reflects Somalia’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its citizens and praised the coordinated work between the government and lawmakers to ensure the body is constitutionally and legally sound.
He also commended the Ministry of Family and Human Rights for steering the legal and technical groundwork needed to set up a functioning institution capable of meeting national responsibilities.
The president urged the incoming commissioners to carry out their duties with integrity, saying their work will be central to building a governance system rooted in justice, accountability and transparency.
The signing coincided with Somalia’s observance of Human Rights Day, marking what officials described as a significant step in the country’s broader efforts to advance human rights protection and institutional reforms.
