GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s election to the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) is a demonstration of the country’s political recovery and growing diplomatic influence, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Wednesday.

“The confidence and support Somalia received from AU member states demonstrate the positive transformation underway in our country,” President Mohamud said in a statement following the vote. He described the outcome as a sign that Somalia is re-emerging as an active contributor to regional peace and stability.

The president highlighted the parallels between Somalia’s new role on the AU’s top peace and security body and its previous service on the United Nations Security Council. “Our return to influential international platforms signals progress after years of instability,” he added.

President Mohamud thanked African governments for their backing, framing the election as a shared commitment to building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous continent. He said Somalia’s presence on the PSC strengthens its voice in shaping continental decisions on conflict prevention, management, and resolution.

Somalia won 46 of 49 votes in the AU Executive Council election, securing one of the East African seats for the PSC’s 2026–2028 term.
