President Mohamud Honors Legacy of Somalia’s First President

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Saturday paid tribute to Somalia’s first President, Aden Abdulle Osman saying he contributed a lot to building good governance and democracy in Somalia.

Speaking during the event held in Mogadishu, celebrated the life and contributions of the nation’s founding said Aden Abdulle left a lasting legacy in the hearts of many Somali people.

“Adan Abdulle was the first president in Africa who was elected and left office peacefully after the elections. 1960 was the year of Africa. Adan Adde was a leader who made history. Our fathers have made history and left a lot of good things with Adan Adde being the first. We have lost some things and we have some others, religion, culture, language, history and other important things,” he said.

Aden Abdulle’s legacy can be remembered through his role as a prominent leader of the Somali Youth League (SYL) where he played a crucial role in guiding the young nation during its formative years.

During his tenure as president, which lasted until June 10, 1967, Aden Abdulle demonstrated his dedication to democracy by peacefully transferring power to his former Prime Minister, Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, after losing the election.

Presient Mohamud said his action set an example for fellow African leaders to respect democracy and ensure peace and stability is maintained despite electoral outcomes.

 “Our founding fathers made history, and Aden Abdulle was at the forefront of that legacy. His leadership, grounded in the values of democracy and good governance, continues to inspire us as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of today.”
