President Mohamud Inspects Gorgor Forces, Urges Greater Military Readiness
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has inspected a key Gorgor commando unit as the government seeks to strengthen the readiness of its special forces in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
The president, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, visited the 1st Gorgor Commando Division in Mogadishu on Thursday and received briefings from commanders and senior officers on the unit’s operations and preparedness.
He also inspected the command headquarters, troop facilities, the unit’s hospital and logistics centres, in a visit intended to assess the conditions and services available to the soldiers.
President Mohamud also met members of the 21st Gorgor Brigade who recently completed advanced military training.
He praised the commandos for their role in Somalia’s security operations and called on them to maintain a high level of readiness as government forces continue their campaign against Al-Shabaab.
The president said the forces should work towards the government’s objective of securing a Somalia free from the militant group.
The visit also highlighted Turkey’s continuing support for the development of Somalia’s armed forces.
President Mohamud thanked the Turkish government and people for their support in rebuilding, training and strengthening the Somali military, including the development of specialised units such as the Gorgor commandos.
Turkey has been a major partner in Somalia’s military training efforts, with Somali troops receiving training at facilities in Mogadishu as part of efforts to build a more capable national force.
The Gorgor units have become an important component of Somalia’s military operations against al-Shabaab, particularly in offensive operations where specially trained forces are deployed.
The latest presidential visit comes as Somalia continues efforts to increase the capacity of its own security forces and reduce reliance on international military support as the country confronts the persistent threat posed by al-Shabaab.
