President Mohamud Leads National Flag Day Commemorations in Mogadishu
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud joined senior government officials and military commanders in Mogadishu on Monday to mark National Flag Day, commemorating a national symbol associated with the country’s independence, unity and aspirations for statehood.
The national ceremony was held at the presidential palace, where personnel from the Somali National Army’s land, air and naval forces took part in a military display highlighting their commitment to defending the country’s sovereignty and national institutions.
President Mohamud said the Oct. 12 anniversary carried deep historical significance for Somalis, describing the flag as a symbol of national unity and the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence.
The ceremony brought together senior figures from Somalia’s federal institutions, including the speaker of the House of the People, the first deputy speaker of the Upper House, the prime minister, the chief justice and commanders of the national armed forces.
National Flag Day marks the adoption of Somalia’s blue flag with a white five-pointed star on Oct. 12, 1954. Designed by Somali civil servant Mohamed Awale Liban, the flag emerged during the country’s struggle for independence and became the national emblem when Somalia gained independence in 1960.
The star has historically represented five Somali-inhabited territories, reflecting the aspirations for unity that shaped the nationalist movement during the colonial era.
The anniversary remains an important occasion for Somalis to reflect on their shared history and national identity, with the flag continuing to serve as the country’s principal symbol at official ceremonies, diplomatic events and celebrations among Somali communities worldwide.
