President Mohamud Meets IGAD Executive Director to Discuss Regional Issues
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu Monday met Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to discuss critical regional issues.
Sources from the Villa Somalia presidential palace stated that the discussion focused on; security challenges, economic collaboration, and ongoing IGAD-led initiatives within Somalia
During the meeting President Mohamud reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to deepening ties with IGAD and contributing to regional stability.
On his part, Dr. Gebeyehu praised Somalia’s progress in state-building, acknowledging the country’s efforts in countering violent extremism, addressing climate-related challenges, and increasing inclusive governance.
He reiterated IGAD’s ongoing support for Somalia’s path to sustainable peace and prosperity.
“Somalia is not only a founding member of IGAD but also a critical partner in our shared mission to promote peace and development in the Horn of Africa. We stand with Somalia as it navigates its path toward sustainable peace and prosperity,” he said.
While meeting Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Fiqi in a separate meeting, Dr. Gebeyehu signed an agreement that will see the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence in Blue Economy.
The center will focus on sustainable maritime development, marking a significant step toward leveraging Somalia’s coastal resources for economic growth.
The visit signals IGAD’s continued dedication to assisting Somalia in its recovery and regional integration efforts.
