President Mohamud Opens Parliament, Pledges More Teachers and First Oil Drilling

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud opened a new parliamentary session on Monday with pledges to expand the education workforce and begin drilling the country’s first oil well, signalling steps toward social investment and economic self-reliance.

Addressing lawmakers, Mohamud said the number of teachers will rise to 10,000 to strengthen schools nationwide. He also announced plans to start oil exploration in the coming months, calling it a milestone for Somalia’s economy and stability.

Parliamentary leaders outlined priorities for the session, including completing constitutional reforms, setting up judicial bodies, and advancing Mogadishu’s special capital status. Lawmakers will also prepare for Somalia’s representation in the East African Legislative Assembly.

The president’s address marks the start of the 7th session of the 11th Federal Parliament, attended by both houses and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
