GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday pledged deeper commitment to climate action, telling African leaders that his country aims to lead on resilience and environmental protection.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Mohamud highlighted Somalia’s progress, including the submission of its updated national climate plan (NDC 3.0), the launch of the Green Somalia Initiative to plant 10 million trees, and a $10 million pledge to the African Union-backed Great Green Wall project.

He also announced the creation of a National Climate Fund and pointed to a $100 million partnership with the Green Climate Fund this year, alongside continued support from the Global Environment Facility and the Adaptation Fund. Debt relief under the HIPC initiative, he added, has opened space for new climate investments.

Mohamud was accompanied by senior Somali officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, Environment Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama, Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, and Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh, underscoring what he called a “united national approach” to tackling climate change.
