GOOBJOOG NEWS | DHUUSAMAREB: Federal government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to holding direct elections, saying it will press ahead with the one-person, one-vote system despite political disagreements and challenges surrounding its implementation.

Speaking at the inauguration of Galmudug’s new leadership in Dhusamareb on Thursday, President Mohamud dismissed concerns that the political tensions could lead to the country’s collapse or social division.

“There will be no compromise; the country’s election will be one person, one vote. Everything that is initiated comes with noise, but we will overcome it. There is no country collapsing and no people separating,” he said.

The president cited what he described as more than two million people who had already voted, arguing that the process had proceeded without major problems.

His remarks come amid an ongoing dispute between the federal government and opposition figures over the country’s electoral framework, with the two sides holding differing positions on how future elections should be conducted.

The disagreement has become a major point of contention in Somalia’s political landscape as the country approaches the next electoral cycle.
