GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed the country’s new federal constitution into law, formally concluding years of review and paving the way for the implementation of a permanent constitutional framework.

The move follows the approval of the constitution by both chambers of the Federal Parliament of Somalia after more than a decade of review since the adoption of the provisional constitution in 2012.

Speaking at a ceremony at the presidential palace in Mogadishu, Mohamud said the government would now begin implementing the new constitutional framework aimed at strengthening governance and democratic institutions.

“Today marks the conclusion of the long journey of reviewing the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the president said, adding that the country would now move forward with its implementation.

The event was attended by Speaker of the House of the People Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur and Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, along with members of parliamentary committees involved in the constitutional review process.

The new constitution will serve as the legal foundation for strengthening state institutions, safeguarding citizens’ rights and consolidating Somalia’s federal system.
