President Mohamud to Call For Stronger UN Support in Peace, Security Reforms

GOOBJOOG NEWS | NEW YORK: Federal Republic of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will use his address to the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York to push for reforms within the UN system and greater international backing for countries on the frontlines of conflict.
Sources close to the presidency said president Mohamud will underline Somalia’s security transition as African Union forces prepare to leave and Somali troops take full responsibility for fighting Al Shabaab, the al Qaeda-linked militant group that has waged a deadly insurgency for more than 15 years.
He is also expected to call for enhanced UN support for peace efforts in fragile regions including Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Haiti, arguing that instability in such countries undermines global security.
Somalia has been working to rebuild state institutions after decades of conflict and has urged international partners to increase investment in stabilization, economic recovery and counter-terrorism.
President Mohamud’s push comes as debate grows over UN Security Council reform, with African leaders demanding fairer representation and quicker responses to emerging crises.
