GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Current and former national leaders will convene for a special meeting next month amid heightened political tensions in the country.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Omar said Friday President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will convene the meeting to discuss major issues of concern in the country but did not state any particular dates.

Noting that there was a need for dialogue amid ongoing political disputes, the minister said the meeting wil bring together members of the opposition, some of whom are former presidents and prime ministers.

The meeting comes amid accusations against the government and President Mohamud by the opposition over a number of issues including election models and preparations for the 2026 presidential elections.

Opposition key figures among them former prime minister Hassan Khaire, Omar Abdirashid and former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed held meetings in Mogadishu on Saturday in what they said was a first in a series of consultations.
