GOOBJOOG NOEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud used the country’s 65th Independence anniversary on Wednesday, to issue a strong call for national unity, reconciliation, and renewed dialogue, warning that Somalia’s freedom remains incomplete without healing deep political divisions.

Addressing a gathering of senior officials and citizens in Mogadishu to mark the start of Independence Week, Mohamud said the sacrifices made by Somalia’s founding heroes must be honored not only in ceremony but by mending the fractures that still undermine the nation.

“True freedom means uniting the hearts of the Somali people. We cannot move forward until we confront the wounds caused by dictatorship, abuse of power, and misrule,” he said.

The President specifically recognized the role played by liberation leaders from Somalia’s northern regions, calling them central to the vision of unity that led to the formation of the Somali Republic in 1960.

He said their legacy must serve as a foundation for renewed efforts to bring the country together.

President Mohamud warned that political divisions, left unaddressed, would continue to threaten Somalia’s stability. He stressed that genuine unity could not be achieved by force or rhetoric but only through “sincere dialogue, justice, and brotherhood.”

He also thanked international partners for supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that external support should complement, not substitute, the country’s internal reconciliation efforts.

“This is a moment to reflect and reset,” Mohamud said. “We must commit ourselves to peace, dialogue, and the shared vision of a united Somali nation.”
