President Mohamud Urges Police Readiness for Elections at Force’s 82nd Anniversary
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has praised the Somali Police Force for recent security gains and urged officers to ensure a peaceful and credible district council election later this month, as the force marked its 82nd anniversary.
Speaking at the official commemoration, the president said the police had made tangible progress in a short period, citing improved public security, the rehabilitation of police stations and advances in professional training.
He called on police leadership to prioritise election security ahead of the Dec. 25 vote, describing the polls as a key step in strengthening democratic governance.
“The Somali Police Force has a national duty to guarantee the safety of citizens and the integrity of the electoral process,” he said, adding that professionalism, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights were essential to public trust.
Founded in 1943, the Somali Police Force has played a central role in maintaining law and order, particularly as the country works to stabilise institutions after decades of conflict.
The event was attended by senior government officials, lawmakers, security commanders, former police chiefs and diplomats, highlighting the force’s role in national security and state-building efforts.
