GOOBJOOG NEWS | LAS ANOD: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called on traditional leaders from Puntland to play a leading role in defending national unity and supporting peace-building efforts, as the federal government seeks to consolidate authority in the north.

President Mohamud met elders led by King Burhan King Muse in Las Anod on the sidelines of the inauguration of the newly formed North Eastern State administration. During the talks, the president stressed the importance of traditional leadership in safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He said elders remained central to social cohesion and urged them to mobilise communities in support of peace, reconciliation and the expansion of federal governance. Mohamud praised their historical role in holding society together during years of conflict and political instability.

In response, King Burhan and his delegation welcomed the establishment of the North Eastern State and thanked the federal government for what they described as its commitment to decentralised governance and national independence. They reaffirmed their support for Somali unity and pledged to help promote reconciliation across the region.

The meeting was attended by senior federal officials, including cabinet ministers, the police commissioner, military officers and politicians from Puntland, underscoring the government’s efforts to blend traditional authority with formal state institutions in pursuit of stability and development.
