GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday opened the Third National Conference of Somali Scholars with a call for greater religious leadership in combating narcotics, strengthening Islamic education, and guiding national unity, themes he said are central to Somalia’s social stability and state-building efforts.

The President warned that narcotic substances are causing severe harm across Somali communities, stressing that the government’s campaign against traffickers requires the full partnership of religious scholars.

“Our people are suffering greatly from the impact of narcotics. The government is waging a tough battle against traffickers, and we expect our religious scholars to join this effort with full commitment,” he said.

President Mohamud outlined a government plan to uplift Qur’an teachers and reinforce the capacity of religious schools, calling Islamic education a national priority that directly shapes the moral fabric of society.

“My government has a comprehensive plan to improve the welfare of Qur’an teachers and enhance the capacity of religious schools,” he noted.

The President also urged scholars to intensify public awareness on core Islamic obligations; fasting, prayer and particularly Zakat, describing these practices as essential tools for strengthening social cohesion and mutual support within Somali communities.

He praised scholars for their enduring role in guiding society and emphasized that their leadership is indispensable as Somalia works to foster unity and resilience at a time of significant social and security challenges.

Nearly 300 scholars from around the world are attending the conference, which is organized by the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.
