Presidential election set for February 8, 2017
A joint session of parliament will elect a new President February 8 ending several false starts marked by delays since September last year, Goobjoog News can exclusively report.
A memo seen by Goobjoog News marks February 8 as the day parliament will cast the vote to choose from a pool of over 20 candidates the next occupant of Villa Somalia. The incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will be defending his seat.
Registration of presidential candidates will take place between January 26 and 29, the memo notes while the Presidential election committee will meet January 30 to deliberate on the election modalities. Parliament Tuesday released a list of 17 senators and MPs who will sit in the committee.
A televised presidential debate will take place on January 31.
Between February 2-5, the memo instructs, candidates will prosecute their case before a joint seating of the House to show cause why they should be elected.
The elections committee will conclude its preparations between 6th and 7th of February ahead of voting the following day.
Each candidate will be required to pay $30,000 as elections fee.
