PM Barre Rules Out Indirect Elections, Backs Direct Vote

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has rejected any possibility of returning to an indirect electoral system, insisting that political power must rest with the people through direct participation in democratic governance.
Speaking at a dinner event hosted at Mogadishu City Hall for delegates of the National Dialogue Conference, Barre said his government remains committed to implementing recommendations from Somali stakeholders to support a transition toward one-person, one-vote elections.
“The DanQaran government is determined to implement electoral proposals and strengthen democracy based on the will of the Somali people,” Barre said. “We will not backslide into indirect elections.”
Barre urged national unity to confront Somalia’s persistent challenges, including insecurity, economic strain, and political fragmentation. He emphasized that shifting away from indirect systems is essential to achieving national cohesion and ending decades of political instability.
“We must move forward with a unified governance model that leaves no Somali behind,” he said.
The Prime Minister also praised the contributions of delegates and public figures who participated in the recent national consultations, saying their input has helped shape critical decisions about Somalia’s future.
