Puntland Forces Mount Operations Against ISIS in Bari Region

GOOBJOOG NEWS|BARI: Puntland Security Forces conducted massive operations in parts of Bari region Tuesday targeting ISIS militants.

According to a statement from the Puntland Counterterrorism Centre, the forces made inroads into Al Khalifa mountain ranges, where the militants are reportedly hiding.

“The forces have spread out in the areas surrounding the Al-Khalifa Mountains, coming from all directions from the target areas where ISIS terrorists are hiding,” the statement read in part.

The Puntland government has conducted a series of operations against ISIS in areas of Bari region where the group is largely based. Several ISIS militants were killed in December following intense operations by the regional forces.

Photos from the scene showed that most of those killed were of non-Somali extraction, adding credence to the increased presence of foreigners in the ranks of ISIS-Somalia.

The group sprang up in the Galgala mountain ranges of Bari region in 2015 under the leadership of former British based cleric Abdulkadir Mumin.
