Puntland to conduct district council elections on May 25-President Deni

GOOBJOOG NEWS|PUNTLAND: District Council elections in Puntland will take place on May 25, 2023, State President Abdullahi Deni has said.

The Office of the President of Puntland announced on Sunday that the easterly state will conduct a state-wide district council election following a pilot exercise in October 2021.

The one-person-one-vote elections took place in Eyl, Ufeyn and Qardo districts where 87 council members were elected in an exercise involving close to 30,000 voters.

The Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) has been conducting voter registration since last year in preparation for the district council elections. The May elections will be a first in Somalia which has grappled with clan-based electoral options in successive elections.

The break-away Somaliland region has successfully conducted one-person-one-vote elections in presidential, parliamentary and local government elections.
