Kenya’s refund for KDF mission in Somalia hits $36m

GOOBJOOG NEWS|NAIROBI: Kenya’s reimbursement for its military operations under ATMIS in Somalia this year stands at $36 million up from $30 million in the 2029/21 financial year.

According to figures from the country’s national treasury, Kenya received an additional 20% of reimbursement for the 2021/2022 financial year in what could point to increased spending by the Kenya Defence Forces in Somalia.

The treasury data indicated that the refunds totalling $36 million against the $30 million target for the financial year under-reporting came from the EU, U.S, UK and other international donors supporting the AU mission in Somalia.
Kenyan has an estimated 4000 troops serving under ATMIS but also maintains other soldiers outside the AU framework just like Ethiopia. According to the revised stipends from the EU in 2016, ATMIS soldiers are supposed to receive $828 but their respective governments deduct a $200 administrative fee leaving them with a $600 monthly pay.
