Rescue Council Hails Constitutional Reforms as Step toward Democracy
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A group of senior Somali political leaders have welcomed the approval of constitutional amendments by the Federal Parliament of Somalia, saying the move strengthens democratic governance and reflects political consensus.
In a joint statement issued in Mogadishu, members of the “Rescue Council” said the amendments incorporate provisions previously agreed with the Federal Government of Somalia during discussions on revising Chapter Four of the country’s provisional constitution.
The leaders said the changes preserve Somalia’s parliamentary system, under which the president is elected by lawmakers from both chambers of parliament.
They also reaffirmed that the prime minister must secure the confidence of parliament and remains subject to a vote of no confidence by legislators, maintaining parliamentary oversight over the executive.
The group further welcomed the decision not to limit the number of national political parties to three, saying the move would promote political pluralism, democratic competition and wider representation.
The signatories congratulated federal institutions, particularly parliament, for approving the amendments, describing the step as evidence of respect for national agreements and commitment to democratic governance.
At the same time, they urged the government to continue inclusive dialogue with opposition groups and other political stakeholders on constitutional matters that may require further review.
They also called on political actors to place national interests above political differences and work toward stability, unity and the completion of an inclusive constitutional framework.
