GOOBJOOG NEWS | NEW YORK: Russia has reaffirmed its firm support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, telling the United Nations Security Council that safeguarding the country’s borders is essential for regional and international stability.

Addressing an emergency open briefing on the Horn of Africa, the Russian delegation said the principles of the UN Charter must be respected and warned against any actions that undermine Somalia’s cohesion.

Moscow stressed that attempts to weaken the unity of a sovereign state were unacceptable and risked destabilising the wider region.

As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia said protecting Somalia’s territorial integrity was not only a national concern for Mogadishu but also a matter of upholding international law and the rules-based international system.

The statement adds diplomatic weight to growing international backing for Somalia amid heightened regional tensions, reinforcing opposition to external interference and efforts to legitimise separatist entities.

Russia said it would continue cooperating with the Federal Government of Somalia, pledging support for the country’s independence and political unity in the face of ongoing geopolitical challenges.
