Saudi government donates food aid to thousands of families in Somalia

Saudi Arabia government has donated food aid to 25,000 families across Somalia in its response to drought relief efforts in the country.

Humanitarian Aid minister Dr. Maryan Khasim said Sunday the food aid will be distributed to thousands of families in the country including the capital Mogadishu. The donation comprises of seven different food types and will be distributed fairly, the minister said.

“We have received a donation from our brothers in Saudi Arabia. Today we are starting the distribution in Mogadishu and its environs. We will then proceed to HirShabelle, Galmudug, South West, Jubbaland and Puntlland,” the minister said.

The drought continues to bite claiming lives and uprooting thousands from their homes as relief agencies up their efforts to avert famine in Somalia.

Despite the relief efforts, many people still remain unreached raising fears the drought could pose further threats to life.

Ibrahim Ali, a district official in Bal’ad, in Middle Shabelle region told Goobjoog News Saturday several people in internally displaced people’s camps were at the risk of starvation as they could not access as food assistance.

“These people are dying of hunger; they are in an empty place where they cannot even shelter against the rains. They get no food, no water and their children are missing. They need an emergency assistance,” said Ali.
