GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) has welcomed the decision of the National Consultative Council to move the country towards one person one vote democracy.

The Congress said the NCC decision which called for a departure from the clan based system will ‘aid Somalia to overcome its protracted crisis and lack of governance.’

“One person one vote expresses the principle of equal representation in voting,” SOCOTU said adding, “We urge politicians and the Somali public to support this new process of restoring power to the hands of the people.”

The NCC announced on Sunday that Somalis will exercise their democratic right in upcoming elections starting from the leadership and parliamentary elections at the state level next November.

It also proposed a move from parliamentary to Presidential system effectively scrapping the position of a prime minister and introducing the Vice President’s position.
