Second day of consultative talks to inspire commitment and united front among Somali leaders

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The introductory session of the historic meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former national leaders among them his predecessor, Prime Ministers and Speakers of Parliament illustrated a crucial need for a commitment and collaboration to address some of the important issues necessary to take Somalia forward.

The meeting which has been hailed as a show of visionary leadership by President Mohamud lay the groundwork for serious and in-depth deliberations from today. According to a source privy to the talks, President Mohamud briefed the former leaders on some of the major milestones thus far, critical issues yet to be addressed and the overarching need for the participation of all leaders in moving the country forward.

The former leaders also shared their observations and counsel based on their experience and a desire for a united, stable and prosperous Somalia. The leaders also lauded the President’s unparalleled commitment to moving Somalia forward in all spheres. They particularly singled out the President’s approach and efforts in the war against Al-Shabaab and other extremist elements in the country.

It emerged from the meeting that the challenges afflicting the country cannot be resolved by the President alone. The leaders expressed their commitment to further promote by-partisan and consultative engagements to take the country forward.

UNITED FRONT

Today’s session will be delving into specific issues and intending to find a united front, especially on democratization and security. Notably, the President will be engaging the leaders on his vision for a democratic and inclusive Somalia. This is based on the proposals by the National Consultative Council in May which proposed among others the holding of one-person one-vote elections in 2026 and the introduction of a presidential system which will now give Somalis a direct ticket to vote for their president.

The president has reiterated that these proposals will still require the input and thinking of other stakeholders including the approval by parliament. By bringing together his predecessor and other former leaders, the President will be aiming to enrich his understanding and create a more inclusive political process before moving to parliament.

Notable also will be mobilizing more support for the war against Al-Shabaab. Unlike in the past when the fight was left to the security forces, the President has sought to include civilians and other political actors. The joint offensive between the Community Defence Forces, Somali National Army and state forces demonstrated the President’s continued spirit of inclusivity. Besides the clan fighters, some members of parliament also headed to the battlefield in what has been described as the single most all-rounded offensive against Al-Shabaab.

Operation Black Lion which entails the second phase of the campaign is expected soon. The President will be aiming to bring on board the former leaders to not only get their support but also as a confidence-building measure among members of the public through their respective leaders.

It is anticipated that the leaders will be rallying behind the President and renewing their commitment to winning the war against Al-Shabaab. A peaceful and safe Somalia is a benefit to all Somalis and even to neighbouring countries.
