Second Somali Gorgor Brigade Completes Advanced Training in Turkey
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A brigade of Somalia’s elite Gorgor commandos has completed an advanced military training programme in Turkey, as the Somali National Army prepares to take on greater responsibility for security amid the planned withdrawal of international forces.
The 22nd Brigade of the army’s Ground Forces formally concluded the programme at a ceremony in Turkey, marking the second Ground Forces brigade to complete a full training course as a unit.
The training was aimed at strengthening the brigade’s military skills and operational capabilities, although details of the programme, including its duration and specific areas of instruction, were not provided.
The development comes as Somalia works to strengthen its national security forces and gradually assume responsibility for military positions currently held by international forces.
Somali troops are expected to take over security responsibilities as the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) continues its mandate to support the country’s security transition and efforts to combat Al-Shabaab.
The transition is part of a broader effort to build the capacity of Somali security institutions to secure the country with reduced reliance on international military support.
However, the process faces challenges, including the need for sustained funding, equipment, logistical support and coordination among Somali security forces and international partners.
