Security Gains in Mogadishu Drive Strong Voter Registration, Deputy Minister Says
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala has said security gains in Mogadishu are driving strong public participation in this month’s local council elections.
Speaking during an assessment tour of Hodan District and the Bakara Market, Al-Adala said merchants and residents reported a markedly safer environment, particularly in Bakara Market, once a hotspot for intimidation by extremist groups. He said traders are now operating “without fear,” reflecting improved cooperation between the business community and government authorities.
According to the deputy minister, most of the residents he met had already collected their voter cards, with others expected to do so in the coming days. He said the enthusiasm reflects growing confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 25 December district polls.
Al-Adala urged remaining voters to collect their cards promptly, saying the current stability offers a secure opportunity for civic participation. He credited Somali Security Forces for the progress, noting that their operations have enabled election bodies and the National Consultative Council to move forward with preparations for the vote.
