‘Several’ Shot Dead as Protesters Storm Parliament Buildings in Nairobi
GOBJOOG NEWS/NAIROBI: Close to ten people were shot dead by security forces Tuesday afternoon as protestors breached the parliament security and made way in as MPs debated the controversial Finance Bill.
Multiple local media reports indicate that at least eight people were shot dead within the precincts of parliament as protester surged and entered the building. Protesters were seen carrying bodies of the dead to the main gate of the parliament building.
Protesters entered the parliament building and destroyed sections of it while some set on fire part of the building.
Meanwhile the controversial Finance Bill sailed through the Committee Stage with the backing of the government side which commands a majority in the House.
The Bill now heads to the Third Reading where it will likely be endorsed ahead of the presidential assent.
However the countrywide demonstrations and deaths today may force the president to ask the mover of the bill to postpone it.
