Siege On Recovered Areas In Bay And Bakol Effects Businesses Badly
Reports from Bakol and Bakool regions confirm that the prices of food and non-food item in the markets has increased above normal due to low supply brought by heightened conflicts and blockade of major trade routes leading to the major districts.
Fatuma one of the local traders in Wajid district told Goobjoog FM that the price of food that has been sky rocketing day after day has reached its highest level ever.
He said the rise in the price of food is attributed to worsening food security due to drought and the tight sanction imposed by Al-shabab in the region after joint forces launched operations.
“No vehicles dare to transport food to Wajid as the main roads leading to the town were blocked by Al-Shabab fighters; the only source people feed on is food aid brought by brought the federal government of Somalia therefore we urge the government forces to reopen the blocked roads”
“Most of the people in Bay districts who fled from the vast areas of the region as they cannot afford to buy the available food in the markets” the trader said.
Al-Shabab sanction became barrier to the traders who bread winners on their meagre business as there are no supply products due to the cut-outs in region according elder Mohamud Hassan in Wajid Town.
The district commissioner of Wajid, Abdullahi gardhuub, calls international community and humanitarian aid agencies to deliver emergency support amid dire situation affecting large number of people in the region.
There are no ongoing innitiaves to re-open the blocked roads by Al-shabab in the region as to improve the accessibility of the major town by humanitarian aid agencies and large trucks transporting essential goods and services.
